  • 2012Construction of Maureen Aitken Garden

Pictured is alumna Her Excellency Penelope Wensley AC, Governor of Queensland, as she breaks ground for the Maureen Aitken Garden. Head of College (2009 – 2016) Adjunct Professor Iyla Davies is to her right.

  • 2013Completion of Maureen Aitken Garden

Construction of the Maureen Aitken Garden was completed in 2013. This space between the Old Wing (now called the Sallyanne Atkinson Building) and New Wing buildings gave students and the College community a new space to gather for relaxation and celebration.

Residents, including the Student Club Executive and Resident Assistants, are pictured sitting in the alumnae circle at the dedication of the Maureen Aitken Garden in 2013.

  • 2013Recreation of 1914 photo

In 2013, residents and staff recreated the iconic 1914 archive photograph of the first College residents, using the Wooza hand sign as a modern twist. Head of College (2009 – 2016) Adjunct Professor Iyla Davies stood in for founding Principal Freda Bage while Dean of Students Chloe Langbroek represented Hilda Cleminson, who was a graduate student in 1914.

  • 2014Our Centenary

100 years from the beginning of The Women’s College, our community celebrated the College’s milestone anniversary through a variety of events, including the College’s Birthday at Government House, the publication of a book about the College’s first 100 years (pictured), and a Centenary Gala Ball at City Hall.

  • 2014Construction of Centenary Wing

The Centenary Wing project was part of the College’s 100th Anniversary celebrations. With the completion of Centenary Wing on 14 March 2015, Women’s was able to provide accommodation in our living and learning community for an additional 50 students, bringing the total capacity to 253.

Donors contributed to plaques, windows and bricks in the building to place their name in history as part of the project.

The following reflection is about the design and construction of Centenary Wing and its impact on The Women’s College community, authored by Megan Traynor-Boyland, who was the Project Director for Centenary Wing.
