  • Charlene Carrington (1977 – )

The artwork is inspired by a design from the late Jack Britten (c. 1921 – 2002) titled "Redback Country" and painted by Jack in 1999. Charlene Carrington was a protégé of Jack’s and commenced painting under his direction at age ten years. Charlene has painted this work as a Tribute to one of the most renowned of the Ochre Masters of the Kimberley.

About the artist

Charlene Carrington was born in Perth in 1977. She grew up at Warmun Community, Turkey Creek in Western Australia.

Charlene comes from a family of artists and started painting at an early age. She is the second child of Churchill Cann and Sade Carrington, both international artists. Charlene is taking the ochre medium into a totally new perspective, still with the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) Stories of her Kitja culture. She has received numerous awards, and her artworks have appeared in many solo and selected group exhibitions.

Dr Sallyanne Atkinson AO was a resident of the College in 1960. After graduation, she became a journalist and then entered politics, becoming Brisbane’s first – and to date only – female Lord Mayor. After retiring from politics, Sallyanne was a Business and Community Leader. She served on the College Council as President from 2009 to 2020. For her contributions to local government, business and the community, she was awarded an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) and a Centenary Medal, and received the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa from her alma mater in 2007 in recognition of her achievements and contribution.
