Gwendolyn Muriel Grant was born in Ipswich and, after attending the Misses Clark's School in Toowong, studied art at Brisbane Technical College under Godfrey Rivers and entered the (Royal) Queensland Art Society's annual exhibition in 1899. While employed as a governess on several stations in North Queensland, she continued painting and exhibiting, and in 1906 held a successful solo exhibition in Brisbane. In 1915 she married fellow artist William Gregory Grant. While raising their two children, ‘Stan’ (as she was called by her husband), maintained her professional life. From 1920, she regularly entered the Archibald prize, establishing a reputation as a portrait painter. She continued to teach art at the Brisbane Technical College until the age of 75. Her studies of Sir James Blair and Professor B. D. Steele are held by The University of Queensland.
