About the artist

Carlene was born Carlene De Rose, in Aputula (formerly known as Finke, in the Northern Territory) in 1950. Her work is contemporary while being based on Country and the creation being of her family's country, the kalaya (emu).

Carlene's art has been shown in many exhibitions both nationally and internationally. It has also been acquired for the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery collection. Carlene has twice been a finalist in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. She is a strong participant in women's ceremony and is passing this knowledge down to her daughters. Carlene is on the Ernabella Arts board. She lives near Ernabella at the homeland Black Hill No. 2.

More about the provenance

Dr Sallyanne Atkinson AO was a resident of the College in 1960. After graduation, she became a journalist and then entered politics, becoming Brisbane’s first – and to date only – female Lord Mayor. After retiring from politics, Sallyanne was a Business and Community Leader. She served on the College Council as President from 2009 to 2020. For her contributions to local government, business and the community, she was awarded an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) and a Centenary Medal, and received the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa from her alma mater in 2007 in recognition of her achievements and contribution.
