About the artist

Bronwyn Jean Dorothy Tricks was born in Melbourne and educated at Firbank Church of England Girls Grammar School and Melbourne Technical College. She studied drawing at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School and, when she moved to Brisbane with her then husband, Fergus Yeates, studied painting with Jon Molvig and taught drawing in the Department of Architecture at The University of Queensland.

From 1959, she travelled extensively in Europe and Asia, later moving to Sydney with her second husband, Laurie Thomas. In Sydney she became the Director of the Bonython Gallery and of the Australian Centre for Photography.

In later life she became an ardent student of Chinese art and culture, visiting China and studying Chinese language in both Sydney and Beijing where she lived for several years, teaching English and assisting galleries with exhibitions. On her return to Sydney she continued to promote Chinese artists and was active in organisations such as the China Education Centre (Australia).

More about the provenance

Judith (Judy) Cuppaidge was the wife of Russell Cuppaidge CBE who served as President of The Women’s College Council from 1951 until 1972. His guidance carried the Council through the difficult years of planning and construction of the current College in St Lucia. He oversaw the move from Kangaroo Point in 1958 and a wing is named in his honour.
